What is the role of the Lavender Trust?
The Lavender Trust aims to raise money to help further develop Breast Cancer Care's services and information specifically for younger women with breast cancer and breast health concerns. Money raised so far has been used to recruit a younger women's specialist nurse who works on the helpline, runs telephone support groups, and produces factsheets (see particularly: Factsheet 13: Breast cancer and pregnancy, Factsheet 15: Ovarian ablation, Factsheet 16: Breast cancer treatment and fertility) and booklets. The recruitment and training of younger women volunteers continues.
Why does the Lavender Trust exist?
Over 35,000 women (and 250 men) are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK. Of these women, 20% are pre-menopausal and have very different yet specific support needs and concerns. Almost 7,000 women under the age of 50 will be told that they have breast cancer this year. Younger women are often faced with very specific issues such as early menopause, pregnancy and fertility, caring for small children, insurance difficulties, employment concerns and welfare rights.
