WALKING IN THE RAIN!
Many thanks to GRW supporters and their hounds mainly from the Valleys who braved the elements at the Brynbach Park Sponsored walk on June 29th. The walk was interupted when a strange yellow disc briefly appeared in the sky but this was soon replaced by the warm, horizontal drizzle that characterised the day. Never mind people smiled as they walked in the rain and as always the elegant, gentle hounds made a great impression. Special thanks to the two members whose names we will find out who raised over £300 in sponsorship.
CAPITAL DAY OUT FOR THE GREYHOUNDS
Saturday June 7th in Cardiff was something of a landmark day for GRW. Over 40 volunteers turned out at different times and there were greyhounds everywhere making a fantastic impression on people out for the day in our capital city. Over £1000 was raised, hundreds of leaflets were distributed and
we had many enquiries about greyhounds as pets. A fantastic effort from all and special thanks go to Tina Davies for doing such a brilliant job organising the day.
ANNUAL DOG SHOW MAY 5th 2008
A big thank you to Arena Pontardawe for inviting us. The end result was that greyhound owners who came from far and wide enjoyed a family day out with some great entertainment - as well as the dog show, while people who live in the local community could enter their pooches in the show and meet the greyhounds. Hundreds of people came - too many to count, and everyone could see what great pets greyhounds make. This was a real win-win - a model to be repeated!
GRW MEMBER'S CROSS COUNTRY MARATHON TO HELP THE HOUNDS
Congratulations to GRW member Evan Kinsey, from Newtown in Powys. Evan completed the gruelling 22 mile run, the Bishop's Castle "Round and About" cross country event and in the process raised over £700 in sponsorship for GRW. Well done Evan!!!
GREYHOUND RESCUE WALES CALENDAR 2009

SUNDAY TIMES EXPOSES SECRET TRADE IN GREYHOUND BODY PARTS
Once again the Sunday Times has provided hard evidence of healthy "retired" greyhounds being killed, so that even after they have finished racing, they can make money for someone (Sunday Times 02.03.08. Vets' secret trade in body parts by Daniel Foggo.)
"An undercover reporter posing as an owner found that staff at the Greyhound Clinic in Essex agreed to kill greyhounds for £30 each, even though he told them the dogs had ' nothing wrong with them'".
Perhaps more shocking is the fact that "two students from the RVC" (Royal Veterinary College)were waiting for the greyhounds to be euthanased so they could "take tissue from healthy dogs", and that they "appeared uninterested" in the fact that the dogs were being destroyed even though the undercover reporter stressed there was "nothing wrong with them".
The undercover reporter was not asked to give a name, phone number or address, at any time. This means that anyone could turn up at the clinic and hand over a greyhound and there would be no way of tracing them, or their greyhound.
The report then goes on to reveal why the clinic is so willing to euthanase helathy dogs so cheaply. It quotes John O' Connor the Head Vet and Director at the clinic who said he had "an exclusive commercial contract with the Royal Veterinary College.... and that he expected 'at least £30 per body part'".
This report is another timely investigation by Daniel Foggo that builds on his exposé of the thousands of greyhounds that were killed at Seaham. It brings to light one more of the "black holes" that so many "retired" greyhounds fall into.

Greyhound Rescue Wales always seeks support in this work. Offers are always being sought for kind and loving homes; volunteers are needed to take on some of the practical tasks in rehoming the dogs – transporting them or taking ‘phone-calls from adverts, or to organise fund-raising activities. Individuals can make a real difference by making a donation and/or becoming a member of Greyhound Rescue Wales.
